Last week, I mentioned that this time of year offers less physical work with its accompanying busy hands, allowing for more contemplative and planning endeavors instead. Well, I was wrong! The expectations for the week were quickly buried under the falling snow, and the resulting unseen tasks associated with it. All the snow that made for a lovely white Christmas also lead to a trio of post-Christmas snowy breakdowns.
That’s right, we here at ABC acres pulled off the hat trick of a broken 3-point hitch lower link lever on our tractor, a bent hook and loss of a rear tire chain on the ATV, and a snowblower snarled with a load of wire diabolically hidden beneath an innocent-looking blanket of white. All happened within a couple of days of each other, making what we thought would be relaxing and slow-paced days quite the opposite; a flurry of activity and repairs in order to get our equipment back up and ready for the task of more snow removal, especially as this winter has been much more snowy than our previous 4 here at ABC acres.
Not all this past week has been snow-induced toil, though. We have also been enjoying gifts given from family and friends. I have been particularly excited about my pearl oyster mushroom kit that I received from Tim. He knows my interests, and is a fun guy (haha), which is why he gifted me with the mushroom kit! It has been great watching the mushrooms grow, and my family will be enjoying the first few for dinner tonight! I have loved the kit so much, I even made a video about it this week, which you can watch here:
This week has once again reminded us that farm life is never boring, and will always keep us on our toes. It is also good to have a flexible attitude and a strong back- all that snow shoveling! We will continue to make plans, but we have learned that to try and be rigid is an invitation to be humbled, or at least frustrated. Best to make our plans in pencil, knowing they may very well change at the drop of a hat, or at the dropping of another 6 inches of snow!
Blessings,
Grant
