Okay, this week has been a blur as I settle into my position as the new farm manager here at ABC Acres. It’s been 10 days since I arrived in Hamilton and 9 that I’ve worked, so excuse me if I touch base on any of the happenings that Tim covered last week.
My family and I are fortunate to stay in one of the rental properties on the farm as we wait for the movers to arrive with our goods. If you happen to be looking for an amazing farm stay these houses are beautiful, with stunning views. Even though we’re nowhere near settled we are very happy to call ABC Acres home.
As you know two of our Nubians gave birth in my first days here and the kids are all doing great, enjoying the sunshine and all the joys of being a kid; romping, jumping, climbing and generally expressing their goatness. On a personal note my wife and I were able to explore the property over the weekend and were able to introduce our baby to the goats, she loves them. This past week we also moved our coop 2 laying flock out with the cattle where they have been bale grazing all winter, the ladies are loving pecking and scratching through the spent hay. They seem to be fulfilling their dietary requirements from the various insects and micro fauna living in the litter left by the cows as they are largely ignoring their grain rations.
Mid week the Southwells and I had an evening meeting to help define our Holistic Context, an important piece of Holistic Management, and my enthusiasm to work for and alongside this family was confirmed. I knew I liked these people but after hearing Sarah give a long passionate statement about the family’s motives for the land and empowering people to care for themselves the land and their community, I might be in love (shh don’t tell anyone).
On the downside of the farming life both Tim and I are struggling with injuries, and must make a comical site as he limps on the right and I limp on the left. He’s struggling with a nagging foot injury and I tweaked my back most likely from sitting stagnant in a car for 4 days during the move then unloading objects that I should have had help with by myself. Remember folks bend at the knees and ask for help! I know I’ll be back to tip top form shortly but feel bad as I know Tim is suffering from working harder than superman for the past years and wish him a quick recovery.
That said we’ll both get over our issues eventually and the positives on this farm far outweigh any temporary bodily ailments. If you don’t believe me come spend a week in one of our farm rentals, as I said the accommodations are splendid and we won’t make you work.

Until Next week -Matthew Sargent
